Ignace High School Continuing Education

Ignace High School is located in Ignace, Ontario, Canada. Ignace High School is offering the Geometry and Discrete Mathematics (MGA4U) and Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus (MCB4U) courses through the Continuing Education department as night school courses semester one for the 2006/2007 school year. The MGA4U course starts Thursday October 12 and ends Wednesday January 17, 2007. The MCB4U course starts Monday October 16 and ends Wednesday January 24, 2007. These courses are offered by distance education via the Contact North/Contact Nord network.

It is important to register early for these courses as materials need to be sent out to the Contact North/Contact Nord network sites. The minimum enrollment is 10 students. Registrations will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

You must be a resident of Ontario to access these courses.

These two courses will be offered over the Contact North/Contact Nord network using the e-learning platform Centra Symposium. Centra ensures excellent two-way communication between the instructor and student(s).

Follow the stats link for some statistics on the success of the MGA4U and MCB4U courses and the old curriculum Calculus and Algebra and Geometry courses over the past 13 years.

Both courses run every Monday and Thursday. The MGA4U course is from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. The MCB4U course is from 7:30 to 9:20 p.m. Each course has either 7 or 8 Wednesday classes for the course assessments. All times quoted are Eastern Time.

 Geometry and Discrete Mathematics (MGA4U)

The Geometry and Discrete Mathematics (MGA4U) course enables students to broaden mathematical knowledge and skills related to abstract mathematical topics and to the solving of complex problems. Students will solve problems involving geometric and Cartesian vectors, and intersections of lines and planes in three-space. They will also develop an understanding of proof, using deductive, algebraic, vector, and indirect methods. Students will solve problems involving counting techniques and prove results using mathematical induction.

MGA4U Prerequisite: Functions and Relations, Grade 11, University Preparation

Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus (MCB4U)

The Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus course builds on students’ experience with functions and introduces the basic concepts and skills of calculus. Students will investigate and apply the properties of polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions; broaden their understanding of the mathematics associated with rates of change; and develop facility with the concepts and skills of differential calculus as applied to polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Students will apply these skills to problem solving in a range of applications.

MCB4U Prerequisite: Functions and Relations, Grade 11, University Preparation, or Functions, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

Materials for both courses provided to the student include: a text, student guide, and a complete set of textbook solutions.

There is NO TUITION fee for either of these courses. However, there are two costs to the student. One is a $50.00 postage fee charged per course (per student) for the postage necessary to transport the materials, tests and assignments between the Contact North/Contact Nord site/student and the instructor. The second is a $10 telecommunication fee per course (per student) to cover the cost of occasional faxing to the student and telephone calls during the course.

The instructor for both of these courses will be Al Richards. Al has 20 years teaching experience (mostly mathematics) and has taught the old curriculum MAGOA and MCAOA courses by distance a total of 35 times from 1995 to 2003, and the MGA4U and MCB4U courses each seven times at a distance.

If you are interested in either or both of these two courses please contact the instructor by email at al.richards@kpdsb.ca or by phone or fax at (807) 934-6009.

Registrations for these two courses MUST be sent by fax to (807) 934-6009. Registration forms can be obtained from one of the the URLs following this paragraph. For information regarding other distance education courses or Contact North/Contact Nord visit their web site.

Registration forms are available at either of the following links (html) or (Word) for both of the MGA4U and MCB4U courses.
